Yoga Therapy: Healing Through Mindful Movement

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy is a form of body work that combines kinesiology with elements of yoga-breath, movement and stillness-to bring proper function back to the major joints in your body.

Through gentle, mindful processes, we seek to remind the body how to move in the range of motion we were built for. Sometimes this means taking movement back to its smallest whispers in order to re-set neuromuscular patterns. Over time we make these movements bigger and bigger until proper, pure movement is restored. This results in decreased pain, tension and stress.

The focus isn’t solely on movement though. The way you engage with each movement is also key. Through Yoga Therapy, you can begin to strengthen you mind/body/spirit connection which opens the door for even deeper healing.

How is Yoga Therapy different from mainstream yoga?

Yoga Therapy is focused entirely on your needs and how the tools of yoga can best support you. We’ll look at your symptoms and identify the best methods to help you manage them.

If moving through yoga poses is an appropriate part of your treatment, we focus only on how the pose can support you. There is no set bar or standard you need to meet. We focus on movements that are comfortable and supportive for your body. The emphasis is always on how you feel, not how you look or how far you can push yourself.

  • Is Yoga Therapy right for you?
  • Do you have chronic pain or long standing limitation of movement?
  • Are you missing out on your favorite activities because your body doesn’t move the way it used to or because it’s become too painful?
  • Have you tried a number of different treatments such as chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage and acupuncture but only found temporary relief?
  • Are you ready and willing to be an active participant in your recovery?

If yes, then Booking a Session with Instill Yoga Therapy will get you on the road to recovery and back to the life that you want to live.

What can you expect?

Before Your First Consultation

I’ll send you a body diagram and questionnaire to complete

These documents cover areas where you’re experiencing pain, tension, or other symptoms; relevant medical history; and activities you love but can’t do.

We will have a 30 minute phone call to discuss your needs and goals and answer any questions that you have.  Thereafter I will invite you to book your first session.

At Your First Session

We’ll chat more in depth about your reasons for seeking therapy now

If Yoga Therapy is an appropriate fit, we’ll talk about the best treatment plan for you. Your plan may include:

  • Breathing Exercises
  • Physical Yoga Postures (Asanas)
  • Meditation/Guided Imagery
  • Homework

We’ll continue with a postural assessment to see how you hold yourself and how your body is currently aligned/misaligned

Then it’s time to start moving. Based on where your pain is, we’ll focus on gentle, small movements of the next closest joint to both assess and begin treating at the same time.

Do not expect to do yoga poses at your first session. Our first priority is to create the proper movement function that’s required for doing poses in the future.

You’ll leave this session with a program sheet and exercises to practice at home.

At Subsequent Sessions

We’ll check in to see how your homework went and generally how things are going

If your body is ready, we’ll move into yoga poses

If you’re not interested in yoga, we’ll use others methods to support your goals.

How long will treatment take?

Let’s sit down and talk about your current problems and how Yoga Therapy can help. Once I know more about you and your unique situation, I can provide a customized treatment plan.
